MARIA FERNANDA JARAMILLO

"Paisaje desnudo"
Acrylic on canvas
24" x 28"
2008

In the early seventies, under the guidance of Colombian artist David Manzur, Maria learned to understand the human body as a source of movement and expression. Over the years and after innumerable live model sessions, Maria found in the human figure the fluid lines and the organic forms that define her abstract landscapes and buildings. The subject matter of her work is not only the obvious result of a career in architecture and landscape design, but also the product of living in Colombia, a voluptuous and sometimes dramatic country. However, the austerity of the snow fields of Quebec and the silent winter streets of Montreal, where Maria has spent the last six years, have lent her work a much needed measure of restraint and silence not to be found in her home country. In a way, her work can be seen as a permanent dialogue and a meditation on Colombian and Canadian landscapes.
