2007

A single channel video-sculpture installation utilizing electroluminescent wire, packing tape and Saran wrap. This is a plastic cast of a real person: my husband Andre. His form is seated on a simple stool and is hunched over, back turned away from any possible social interaction, peering in total fixation at the small video screen placed in front of him. He is completely distracted by the screen. Everywhere under his transparent, plastic skin, tiny, red pulsating lights are visible. The pulsating lights are housed in a clear, plastic rope that snakes and branches through the entire body like a human circulatory system. The tiny, connected lights are reminiscent of blood capillaries and the pulsating light reminds the viewer of the coursing action of blood as it circulates through the body. Although this figure is human, its existence is digital, almost android like. The space immediately around him is in darkness and the glow emanating from his human-like form casts an eerie radiance of red tinged light. The coloured light capillaries of the figure pulsate in time to the sounds of regular breathing coming from the installation.

Computer Widow explores loneliness and human isolation, caused by the many digital distractions that invade our lives, distractions that include video games, the Internet and television.
