2008

Valérie Sangin lives and works in Montreal. She is a member of the collective RUSH, where she collaborates with 4 photographers on social-oriented themes, such as agoraphobia, since 2005.

Her photographs stage subjects in a constant redefinition of their identity, their body and its bonds with other social nuclei (family, the couple and society at large). Valerie’s subjects are in a state of interior turmoil, a conscious rebelling act against the anaesthesia of the senses and a quest
for purpose.

After completing a BFA with distinction in photography from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, Valerie went on to complete her project of
backstage portraits of marginal beauties, where glamour happens during a physical confrontation of the performers’ selves versus their alter egos. Playful roleplaying with wigs and dolls, furry animals and shaggy derelicts…

She now portrays vacuous landscapes, abandoned advertisements or exaggeratingly introspective panoramics.

Upcoming show: Abîmes at the Meridien Hotel in Montreal (spring 2009).
